חייה עריכה

אליזבת בואן נולדה בדבלין, אירלנד. הוריה הנרי צ'ארלס קול בואן ופלורנס קוֹלי בואן הביאו אותה אחר-כך לבואנס קורט (Bowen’s Court) בפראהי (Farahy), ליד קילדוררי, מחוז קורק, שם שהתה בימי הקיץ. כשאביה לקה בנפשו ב-1907, עברו היא ואמה לאנגליה, ולבסוף התיישבו בהייד. לאחר פטירתה של אמה ב-1912, גידלו את בואן דודותיה. היא למדה בבית הספר דאון האוס, אותו ניהל אוליב ויליס. לאחר שלמדה זמן מה בבית ספר לאמנות בלונדון, החליטה שכישרונה טמון בכתיבה. היא בילתה בחברתה של קבוצת בלומסברי ונהייתה חברתה הקרובה של רוז מקאולי, שסייעה לה למצוא מוציא לאור לספרה הראשון, אסופת סיפורים קצרים בשם Encounters ‏(1923).

ב-1977 ויקטוריה גלנדינינג פרסמה את הביוגרפיה הראשונה על אליזבת בואן. ב-2009 פרסמה גלנדינינג ספר אודות מערכת היחסים בין ריצ'י לבואן, המבוסס על יומניה ומכתביה אליו.

אליזבת בואן התעניינה במיוחד ב"חיים בהעמדת פנים ומה קורה כשמורידים את העמדת הפנים", בתמימות של החיים הרגילים ובכוחות שלא ניתן לרסנם ושלבסוף משפיעים על נסיבות חיינו. בואן גם בחנה את הבגידה ואת הסודות שמסתירה מסכת המהוגנות. סגנון כתיבתה משוכלל מאוד והוא שואב הרבה מהספרות המודרנית. היא העריצה סרטים והושפעה מהטכניקה הקולנועית של ימיה. האפיזודות בהם בואן ממקמת את סיפוריה רוויים בתיאורים פסיכולוגיים ובעלילה סבוכה. הרומן המלחמתי של בואן, The Heat of the Day ‏(1949), מתאר בצורה מורכבת מאוד את האווירה בלונדון במהלך ההפצצות עליה בתקופת מלחמת העולם השנייה.
