English: Broad-leaved Helleborine (Epipactis helleborine) - detail. This photo illustrates the detailed structure of the flowers of this orchid; for a wider view, see: 921729.
The lip (the lower projecting part) of the flower is made up of two distinct parts, and both can be seen here: firstly, an inner cup-shaped part that has a dull reddish-brown interior; this part is called the hypochile, and it secretes and holds nectar; this nectar is intended to attract wasps, which are the main pollinators of this species. Joined to the front of this cup is the other part of the lip, the epichile, which is heart-shaped and purplish in colour, with a bent-back tip. The pollen of the flower can be seen as a light yellow mass, with a slightly narrower and darker yellow 'anther cap' sitting on top of it. |
