המחקר על התל החל בשנת 2008 במשלחת מחקר משותפת אמריקאית-סורית שתפקידה היה ל[[סקר ארכאולוגי|סקור]] ול[[חפירה ארכאולוגית|חפור]] את התל. מנהלי המשלחת היו הארכאולוגי גיל סטיין ( Gil Stein) מנהל [[המכון האוריינטלי של אוניברסיטת שיקגו]] ומוחמד סרחאן מנהל [[מוזיאון א-רקה]] (Al-Raqqah Museum)
