העמותה נוסדה ב[[ארצות הברית]] בשנת [[1981]], על מנת ללמוד ולספק מידע על תופעות של חוויית סף מוות. ועם השנים הפכה  לארגון בינלאומי, אשר כולל יותר מ-50 המקומי קבוצות מקומיות ברחבי העולם, וכ-850 חברים. אגודות, קבוצות הדרכה ותמיכה, הוקמו בערים הגדולות בארה"ב.<ref name{{הערה|שם="Anderson 1999">|Anderson, Jon.
