== מחקריו ==
מחקריו הרבים של גליל הטביעו את חותמם בחקר המקרא, ההיסטוריה של עם ישראל בתקופת המקרא והאשורולוגיה, והם נחשבים לפורצי דרך בזכות מסקנותיו המקוריות. תרומתו למחקר נוגעת במספר צירים עיקריים:
1. רשימות היחס השבטיות במקרא
פרופ' גליל חקר את רשימות היחס של שבט יהודה בדה"א ב–ד, הבהיר את אמינותן ההיסטורית ואת תרומתן המכרעת להבנת תהליכי ההתהוות וההתנחלות של עם ישראל בארץ ישראל (ראו ברשימת הפרסומים, המצורפת להלן, מאמרים מס' 1, 6, 10–11, 32–34, 85, 91, 108–109).
2. הגיאוגרפיה ההיסטורית של ארץ ישראל בתקופת המקרא
כמו כן תרם פרופ' גליל תרומה חשובה מאד לחקר הגיאוגרפיה ההיסטורית של ארץ ישראל ולהבנת הטקסטים הגיאוגראפיים במקרא, ופרסם מחקרים רבים בסוגיה זו (ראו שם, מאמרים מס' 5, 7, 21, 31, 37, 39, 41–42, 71–72, 79–80, 108, 114, 149).
3. האפיגרפיה והפליאוגרפיה של ארץ ישראל
פרופ' גליל פיענח את שתי הכתובות העבריות הקדומות והחשובות ביותר
(1) בשנת 2010 הוא פיענח את הכתובת העברית מחורבת קיאפה מימי דוד המלך. הכתובת כוללת 66 אותיות והמסר שלה הוא חברתי: היא קוראת לישראלים לדאוג לחלשים, והיא ערוכה במבנה ספרותי משוכלל. פרופ' גליל פיענח את הטקסט והדגיש את חשיבותו העליונה לחקר המקרא ולהבנת תולדות ישראל בתקופת דוד המלך (ראו מאמר מס' 115).
(2) הוא פיענח לאחרונה (פברואר 2022) גם את הכתובת על גבי לוחית העופרת מהר עיבל (מאה י"ג לפסה"נ). הכתובת תפורסם בקרוב מאד ויש לה השלכות חשובות ביותר ומרחיקות לכת על ראשיתו של ישראל בארצו. זו פריצת דרך מרגשת מהמעלה הראשונה – תרומה משמעותית ביותר לחקר המדע, ויש לזקוף הישג עצום זה לזכותו של פרופ' גליל (ראו מאמר 154).
תרומתו של פרופ' גליל לחקר האפיגרפיה והפליאוגרפיה של ארץ ישראל ושכנותיה בתקופת המקרא, בפרט, ולחקר הכתובות האכדיות המלמדות על חיי הכלכלה והחברה באמפריה הניאו-אשורית, בכלל, ניכרת גם בפיענוח כתובות עבריות, מואביות, ארמיות ואכדיות נוספות ובהן גם כתובת מימי שלמה המלך שנמצאה בעופל בירושלים (מאמרים מס' 128, 130), כתובות מואביות שנמצאו בעטרות בעבר הירדן, ממאה ט' לפה"ס (מאמר 148), כתובות ארמיות מתל דן (מאמרים מס' 82–83) ומיבש גלעד (מאמרים מס' 134–135). כמו כן פיענח פרופ' גליל כתובות אכדיות, הרשומות בכתב היתדות, הנוגעות להבנת ההיסטוריה החברתית-כלכלית של האימפריה הניאו-אשורית, לרבות גורל הגולים הישראליים באשור (ראו מאמרים מס' 57, 86, 92, 95, 98, 102, 105, 107).
4. הכרונולוגיה של מלכי יהודה וישראל
פרופ' גליל תרם רבות לחקר הכרונולוגיה של מלכי יהודה וישראל בתקופת המקרא, ופרסם מאמרים רבים בתחום זה (ובהם גם 35–36, 90, 93, 112, 116). מחקרו החשוב ביותר בתחום זה הוא בלא ספק ספרו המונומנטלי: '''''The Chronology of the Kings of Israel and Judah''''' בספר זה התמודד גליל עם אחת הסוגיות הסבוכות ביותר בחקר המקרא. הוא הצליח להוכיח שמרבית הנתונים הכרונולוגיים במקרא משקפים מציאות של ממש ומתיישבים יפה עם כל הנתונים הכרונולוגיים החוץ-מקראיים. נתונים אלה מהווים שלד של ההיסטוריה של עם ישראל בתקופת המלוכה – ומכאן חשיבותם העצומה להבנת תולדות ישראל בתקופה המקרא. ספר זה, בדומה למחקריו האחרים, מצוטט תכופות במחקר והתקבל יפה על-ידי חוקרים רבים בכל רחבי העולם. זה ספר יסוד בהיסטוריה של עם ישראל בתקופת המקרא, החשוב ביותר שנכתב בתחום זה, ומקומו לא ייפקד בשום ספרייה.
5. ההיסטוריה החברתית-כלכלית של האמפריה הניאו-אשורית
פרופ' גליל הפגין מצוינות אקדמית יוצאת דופן גם בחקר ההיסטוריה החברתית-כלכלית של האמפריה הניאו-אשורית, ופרסם מחקרים רבים שהפכו לנכס צאן ברזל בתחום זה, ובהם גם מאמרים מס' 92, 101, 110, 111, 120, 124, 141, וזאת בנוסף למחקרים שצויינו לעיל בדיון על מחקריו האפיגראפיים. יש להדגיש שמחקרים אלה חשיבותם רבה גם לתולדות ישראל בהיות ישראל ויהודה חלק בלתי נפרד מהאימפריה הניאו-אשורית. מחקרו החשוב ביותר של פרופ' גרשון גליל בתחום זה הוא ספרו: '''''The Lower Stratum Families in the Neo-Assyrian Period''''' במחקר חלוצי ופורץ דרך זה ניתח גליל לראשונה את כל הנתונים אודות 500 משפחות שנמנו עם הרובד הנמוך באימפריה הניאו-אשורית (ששלטה גם בארץ ישראל, בימים ההם, במאות ח'-ז' לפה"ס). הוא הוכיח לראשונה שגודלן של המשפחות היה קטן (3.7 בממוצע), וכן שבמאה ז' לפה"ס גודלן אף הצטמצם – ראיה למצוקה גדולה בכוח האדם בחברה האשורית, המסבירה את יחסם המיוחד של האשורים לשבויי המלחמה בכלל, ולגולים מישראל ומיהודה בפרט. גליל בחן את היחסים בין הרבדים השונים בחברה האשורית והראה שיש להגדיר את רוב הקבוצות שנמנו עם המעמד הנמוך באמצעות המונח "אריסים" (ולא "צמיתים"). כמו כן בירר בספר זה את הסוגיות הבאות: דגמי המשפחות, דפוסי הנישואין, גיל הילדים, בעיית העקרות, מספר הדורות במשפחה, משפחות חד-הוריות והוכיח שתופעת הפוליגמיה היתה מצומצמת.
6. ההיסטוריה של עם ישראל בתקופת המקרא
פרופ' גליל תרם תרומה חשובה ביותר לחקר ההיסטוריה של עם ישראל בתקופת המקרא, ופרסם מאמרים רבים בתחום זה, בכלל, ובתחום היחסים הבינלאומיים בתקופה זו, בפרט (מאמרים מס' 25, 38, 40, 56, 71–72, 74, 78, 80, 87, 97, 100, 144). לאחרונה תרם פרופ' גליל תרומה מכרעה ורבת חשיבות להבנת תקופת מלכותם של דוד ושלמה והקדיש לנושא זה מחקרים רבים (מאמרים מס' 117, 125, 127, 129, 131–133, 139, 142–143). גליל ניתח את הנתונים המקראיים ואת הנתונים הארכיאולוגיים והאפיגרפיים שנתגלו לאחרונה בסוגיה זו – והבהיר את הזיקה המיוחדת בין ממלכת ישראל בימי דוד לבין ממלכת חמת הידועה לאחרונה גם בהגדרתה כפלשת הצפונית. הוא הראה שדוד היה מנהיג בעל שיעור קומה, גאון מדיני וצבאי, שעלה בידו לאחד את כל הממלכות באזור, לבלום את התקדמות הארמים, להביסם ולהשתלט על כל המרחב שבו הם שלטו (ראו מאמר א המצורף בזאת).
בספרו '''''ישראל ואשור''''' (2001 - זוכה פרס בהט) – ניתח גליל את היחסים בין מלכויות ישראל ויהודה לבין אשור במאות ט'–ח' לפה"ס. גליל הראה שאשור אמנם שמה קץ לקיומה של ממלכת ישראל וגרמה נזק לממלכת יהודה, אבל במשך רוב התקופה הנדונה, למעט יוצאים מן הכלל, היתה ממלכת ישראל בעלת הברית העיקרית של אשור באזור, בייחוד אחרי עלייתו לשלטון של יהוא מלך ישראל, מפני שישראל חברה לאשור יחד עם ממלכת חמת במלחמתה נגד ארם דמשק.
7. המקרא
פרופ' גליל הוא אחד מחוקרי המקרא החשובים ביותר בעולם. הוא כתב מחקרים רבים בעיקר על ספרי דברים, יהושע, שופטים, שמואל, מלכים, ירמיהו ודברי הימים (ראו לדוגמה מאמר ב המצורף בזאת; וכן גם מאמרים מס' 30, 51, 66, 75, 84, 88–89, 99, 102–103, 113, 118–119, 123, 126, 137, 140, 145–147, 151, 153). הוא חיבר פירוש לספר יהושע (בשיתוף עם י' זקוביץ), ופירוש לספר דברי הימים יחד עם אחרים. גולת הכותרת של מחקריו הוא ספרו '''G''od’s Love Story: Past, Present and Future in the Deuteronomistic Composition''''' ספר זה יראה אור בקרוב גם בגרסה עברית עדכנית: '''''סיפור אהבה אלוהי:'' ''עבר, הוה ועתיד ביצירה הדויטרונומיסטית''.''' בספר זה מוכיח גליל שספר ירמיהו היה חלק בלתי נפרד מ"היצירה הדויטרונומיסטית" שחיבר הדויטרונומיסט בגלות בבל, בשנת 560 לפסה"נ בקירוב. יצירה זו נפתחת בספר דברים, ונחתמת בספר ירמיהו. בספר דברים נסללה הדרך ונקבעו החוקים והמשפטים; ואילו ספר ירמיהו מתמקד בחורבן ובגלות ומבשר לגולים את בשורת הגאולה. בגוף החיבור, בספרי יהושע–מלכים, הובאה סקירה מפורטת של תולדות היחסים בין האל לעם ישראל: יחסים נפתלים וקשים, סיפור אהבה כואב, שיש לו נקודת מוצא, אך אין לו סוף, שידע עליות ומורדות, גאות ושפל, חטא, בגידה וזעקה, שעבוד ונחמה. לדעת פרופ' גליל הדויטרונומיסט בוחן את העבר לנוכח העקרונות של החוקה הדברימית ומתווה את העתיד לאור חזונם של משה וירמיהו. משה מנבא לא רק את הגלות, אלא גם את התשובה והשיבה; ירמיהו אינו רק נביא החורבן, אלא גם נביא הגאולה. הספר בוחן את תהליך התהוותם של הספרים שנכללו ביצירה הדויטרונומיסטית (המהווים כשליש מהמקרא), ודן בהשקפותיו ההיסטוריוגרפיות והתיאולוגיות של הדויטרונומיסט. המסר של היצירה הדויטרונומיסטית, הוא לדעת פרופ' גליל, מסר של תקווה ונחמה. לפי השקפת עולמו של הדויטרונומיסט, אהבת ה' לישראל נצחית היא, הברית – ברית עולם, ודבר ה' לעולם מתגשם. הגלות היא משבר חולף, שבריר רגעי ביחסים הנצחיים, מריבה קטנה של אוהבים, שלא ייפרדו לעולם. ישראל ישובו לאהוב את ה' בכל לבבם ובכל נפשם, ולמלאות שבעים שנה לשלטון בבל – ישיבם ה' לארץ הטובה.
