The 0.76 acre site was transferred from the [[Architect of the Capitol]] to the Park Service in 1996. The Memorial was dedicated in 2000 and ownership of the Memorial was transferred to the [[United States Government]] in 2002. The [[National Park Service]] has the responsibility to maintain the Memorial. The project for the Memorial was initiated in 1988 by the "Go For Broke" National Veterans Association Foundation. The name of this organization was later changed to the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation (NJAMF).
