על פי צו מלכותי משנת [[1421]] הדוכסות ניתנת תמיד לבן הבכור של המלך (שהוא יורש העצר). במקרה בו נפטר יורש העצר, בנו של יורש העצר לא יורש את הדוכסות, וזו חוזרת לכתר, ומועברת למעשה ליורש העצר הבא. מסיבה זו, רק בנו של המלך יכול להיות דוכס קורנוול. במצב בו אין למלך בנים, אמנם הבת הבכורה יורשת את הכתר, אולם היא אינה דוכסית קורנוול במהלך היותה יורשת העצר. יתכן מצב בו יורש העצר הוא [[נסיך ויילס]] אך לא דוכס קורנוול - במצב בו נפטר בנו של המלך, ויורש העצר הוא למעשה בנו של יורש העצר שנפטר (נכדו של המלך), יורש העצר יהא נסיך ויילס, אך מאחר ומדובר בנכדו של המלך ולא בבנו, לא יוכל לשאת בתואר דוכס קורנוול.
