מאז שנת [[1686]] נערך מידי שנה במשך שבועיים בחודש [[מאי]] באתר [[שוק שפרד]] ועד שנת [[1764]] עת שקיום השוק באתר נאסר. קודם לשנת [[1686]] נערך השוק ב[[היימארקט (לונדון)|היימארקט]], ולאחר שנה זו השוק נערך ב[[בו (לונדון)|בו]].
שטח השכונה היה שטח פתוח חקלאי עד [[המאה ה-17]]. השטח הפך לפרוור עירוני של העיר באמצע המאה ה-17, ולרובע מגורים יוקרתי במהלך [[המאה ה-18]]. בשכונה התגוררו [[דוכס וסטמינסטר|משפחת גרוונר]] העשירה. [[אליזבת השנייה, מלכת הממלכה המאוחדת]] נולדה בשכונה.
