האופרה נכתבה בעקבות הזמנה בשנת [[1918]], במהלך ביקורו המוצלח של פרוקופייב ב[[ארצות הברית]]. במהלך סידרת הקונצרטים אשר ניצח עליה ב[[שיקגו]], ואשר זכתה להצלחה רבה, פנה לפרוקופייב מנהל איגוד האופרה של שיקגו, [[קלאופונה קאמפאניני]] וביקש ממנו לכתוב אופרה. פרוקופייב השתמש ב[[ליברית]] המבוסס על מחזהו של גוצי, ואשר החל לעבוד עליו עוד קודם לכן, במהלך המסע לאמריקה. מחזהו של גוצי עצמו היה מבוסס על סיפור מאת [[ג'אמפבטיסטה באזילה]] באותו שם. הליברית בה עשה פרוקופייב שימוש עובדה מתוך התרגום של [[וסוולוד מירהולד]] לרוסית של מחזהו של גוצי, וכללה את כל יסודותיה של ה[[קומדיה דל ארטה]] אך גם מעט יסודות [[סוריאליזם|סוריאליסטיות]]. מאחר ופרוקופייב ידע אנגלית מועטה, ומאחר ולא ניתן היה להציג אופרה רוסית בארצות הברית, נכתבה האופרה ב[[צרפתית]].

The opera was the result of a commission during Prokofiev's successful first visit to the [[USA]] in 1918. After successful concerts in [[Chicago]] (including his First Symphony), he was approached by the director of the [[Chicago Opera Association]], [[Cleofonte Campanini]], to write an opera. The opera was given its premiere performance on December 30, 1921 at the [[Auditorium Theatre]], with the composer himself conducting. It received its first Russian production in [[Petrograd]] (now St. Petersburg) in 1926 and has since entered the standard repertoire of many opera companies.
Probably the best-known piece in the opera is the "March", which was used by [[CBS]] in the series ''[[The FBI in Peace and War]]'' that was broadcast 1944-58.<ref>Pisani (1997), 496</ref> Prokofiev also quotes the march in Act II of his ballet ''[[Cinderella (Prokofiev)|Cinderella]]'' (Op. 87).
