נגד ההגדרה של החידה כ"חידת צוואר": Morgenstern 2006, עמ' 267-268
הנ"ל, עמ' 258 והלאה: הצגת החידה היא צעד פוליטי מחושב של שמשון, שנועד לקרוא תיגר על ההגמוניה הפלשתית. אלמלא היו הפלשתים מוצאים את התשובה לחידה, כפי שקיווה שמשון, היה זה ניצחון מורלי של שמשון, כנציג העם הישראלי, על הפלשתים. ניצחון סמלי שכזה היה עשוי לרומם את רוחם של הישראלים המשועבדים, ולהציג את הפלשתים כמי שהכוח ניוון את חריפותם ואת יכולתם להתמודד עם אתגרים בלתי צפויים. הטרגדיה היא ששמשון לא הבין את ההשתמעויות של חידתו. שמשון נכשל בחידתו שלו, וכישלון זה מביא למפלתו. גורלו של שמשון צפון בחידה עצמו: ה"אוכל" - שמשון התוקפני והמסוכן, יהפוך ל"מאכל" - מושא ללעגם ולהתעללותם של הפלשתים.
