THE ICHANG GORAl, c?, ? AND YOUNG <? SPORT IN WESTERN CHINA 153 shan Zappey shot, in June 1908, a Goral which he thought lookeddifferent from either of the above. Unfortunately it fell on aledge and could not be retrieved. Possibly this was referable tothe Ashy Thibetan Goral (N. cinereus), which is distinguishedfrom the foregoing species by its nearly uniform, distinctlyashy colour ; the whitish patches on the throat and feetsmaller ; tail longer and more bushy. Though of quiet colour, Goral are pretty little beasts, andtheir heads make neat trophies. In a general way they looklike small Serow, having similar but smaller horns, and a rathercoarse shaggy hair, with a wool-like under-fur, but they have nomane, though the hair along the back of the neck is somewhatcrested. They make a curious, rather penetrating, hissingnoise when alarmed, and in early April, at any rate, this noiseis commonly heard when traversing their haunts.
