English: The moss on a tree trunk is NOT often an indicator of direction. In the northern hemisphere the northern side of the trunk (left picture) is more shadowy and therefore: damp. Dampness favours the growth of mosses. The southern side of the same trunk (right) is sunnier and drier and has less moss.
Nederlands: Ook zonder kompas of sterrenhemmel is orientatie mogelijk. Bijv. via mosgroei op boomstammen. Mos groeit veel beter aan de donkere, vochtige noordkant van een stam (foto links), dan op de zonnige, drogere zuidkant van (foto rechts). Beide foto's zijn van dezelfde boom.
The above statement is a common urban mistake and you are just as likely to get lost as find you direction. Moss will grow equally well on either side of a tree, regardless of sunlight. This is easily seen if for example you visit boreal forests or any other forest. |
