בדצמבר 1868 הוקם הקו לראשונה בין דרום קנסינגטון לווסטמינסר על ידי חברת "רכבת המטרופולין", הרכבות הראשונות היו מקרונות עץ שנגררו על ידי [[קטר קיטור|קטרי קיטור]]. בשנת 1871 הורחב מסלול הקו עד ל[[ווסט ברומפטון]], ושלוחה חדשה נבנתה אל [[אילינג|אילינג ברודווי]]. כחלק מהפרוייקט שהשלים את קו סיקרל באוקטובר 1884 הורחב גם קו דיסטריקט עד ל[[וייטצ'אפל]] ולאחר מכן גם עד ל[[אופמינסטר]], בתחילת המאה העשרים תחנות הרכבת היו עמוסות עשן מקטרי הקיטור וחברת הרכבת הזמינה קטרים חשמליים מחברת צ'ארלס יירקס האמריקאית שהחלו לפעול בקו דיסטריקט ב 1905.
