מגוון של אמנות והסכמים נכתבו על מנת לבצע הסדרה של השימוש, הפיתוח והאחזקה של סוגים שונים של נשק להשמדה המונית. האמנות מסדיקות שימוש בכלי נשק תחת מנהגי המלחמה (אמנת האג, פרוטוקול ג'נבה), אוסרות על נשק ספציפי (אמנת הנשק הכימי, האמנת הנשק הביולוגי), הגבלת מחקר ופיתוח של נשקים (האמנה לאיסור על ניסויים גרעיניים), הגבלת סד"ק כלי הנשק (START I, SORT) והסדרה של שימוש אזרחי בחומרים שניתנים לשימוש כפול (האמנה לנשק כימי, האמנה לנשק ביולוגי). כמו כן ישנן אמנות המגבילות את סוג ומספר מערכות ההגנה מפני נשקים בשביל לשמר מצב של הרתעה גרעינית הדדית ואמנות המגדירות אזורים גיאוגרפים חופשים מנשק גרעיני. מאז שנות ה-90 מקודמת באו"ם על-ידי מצרים והליגה הערבית הצעה המבקשת להפוך את המזרח התיכון לאזור חופשי מנשק להשמדה המונית (כימי, ביולוגי וגרעיני).
