ניבן

ניבן (שם מדעי: Gymnothorax) הוא סוג של צלופח ממשפחת המורניים המאגד 126 מינים. הם חיים בימים טרופיים, בייחוד בשוניות אלמוגים ונפוצים באוקיינוס האטלנטי, השקט וההודי וגם בים סוף.

Gymnothorax ‏בלוך, 1795

לצלופחים אלה סנפיר גב ארוך מראשם ועד זנבם. למינים מסוג זה אין סנפיר חזה ובטן. צורתם המוארכת מזכירה במידת מה נחש. חלק מהמינים מגיעים לאורך של עד שלושה מטר, אך מרביתם אינם מגיעים אלא למחצית מכך. הגדולה במיני הסוג היא המורנה ניבן ענקי שמגיעה למשקל 30 ק"ג ולאורך 3 מ'.

המורנות מצוידות בפה אימתני ובלסתות חזקות, לכל מורנה יש שתי מערכות לסתות. אחת גלויה והשנייה נמצאת בתוך גרון הצלופח. הלסת הראשונה נועדה לאחוז בטרף ואילו הלסת השנייה חותכת ואוכלת את הטרף. המורנות עלולות לגרום לפציעות חמורות לאויביהן. הן נוהגות לתקוף אף בני האדם המתקרבים לאזור מחייתן.
