Deutsch: Newcomen Dampfmaschine.

Der im Wasserkessel A erzeugte Dampf wird über das Rohr C in den Zylinder B eingeleitet. Hierdurch bewegt sich der Kolben D, entsprechend der Vorrichtung von Papin, unterstützt durch das Gegengewicht K, nach oben. Die Kraftkopplung erfolgt durch die am Kolben D starr fixierte Stange E, die wiederum durch eine Kette am Balancier F fixiert ist, an dessen anderem Ende das Gegengewicht K über die Kette H fixiert ist. Das Pumpgestänge I ist starr mit dem Gegengewicht gekoppelt und wird von diesem herabgedrückt und in die Höhe gezogen. Durch Verschluss des Rohrs C mittels eines Hahns ist der Zylinderinhalt eingeschlossen, wenn aus dem Wasser Vorratsgefäß L Wasser über die Leitung P in den Zylinder einsprüht. (Genau dieser Zustand ist in der Abbildung dargestellt.) Es tritt die Kondensation des im Zylinder befindlichen Dampfes ein. Hierdurch entsteht im Zylinder ein Vakuum und der Kolben D wird durch den von außen auf ihn wirkenden Luftdruck heruntergedrückt. Gleichzeitig wird über den Balancier F das Gegengewicht K mit dem Pumpgestänge I gehoben. Das Rohr R ist das Ableitungsrohr für das Kondensationswasser, S kennzeichnet den im Reservoir eingetauchten, U-förmigen Abschnitt des Rohrs, der für einen dampfdichten Verschluss des Zylinders sorgt.

M ist das Gestänge einer kleinen Hilfspumpe, deren Druckleitung N das Reservoir L gefüllt hält. In der ursprünglichen Auslegung wurden die Hähne von einem Arbeiter bedient.

English: Newcomen beam engine.

The steam is produced in the boiler A and reaches the cylinder B through the pipe C. The steam in the cylinder forces the piston D upwards, like in Papin’s invention, assisted by the counterweight K. At the piston D the force is coupled via the fixed rod E and in turn by a chain to the beam F. The counterweight K is attached via the chain H to the other side of the beam. The pump rod I is rigidly coupled to the base of the counterweight, being pushed up and down by the corresponding movements of the counterweight. By stopping the flow of steam through pipe C, by use of the stopcock, the contents of the cylinder are closed off. Water from the reservoir L is injected into the cylinder via the pipe P. (This point in the cycle is shown in the illustration). The injected water speeds up condensation of the steam in the cylinder, causing a vacuum. The piston is pushed downward by the air pressure from outside, moving the mechanically coupled beam F as well. This movement lifts the counterweight K and the coupled pump rod I upwards. The pipe R takes away the condensed water, S marks the section of the U-shaped pipe submerged in the reservoir, closing off the cylinder in a steam tight manner.

M is the linkage of a small aŭiliary pump which fills the reservoir L through the pipe N. In the original implementation, the stopcocks were operated manually.

La vapeur est produite en A et passe dans le cylindre B par le tuyau C. Dans ce cylindre la vapeur pousse le piston D vers le haut, comme dans la machine de Papin, aidé par le contrepoids K. La liaison entre le piston D et la poutre F est assurée par la tige fixe E et une chaîne Le contrepoids K est attaché via la chaîne H a l’autre bout de la poutre. La tige de la pompe est fixée à la base du contrepoids. Cette tige est poussée vers le haut et vers le bas par le mouvement correspondant du contrepoids. Quand l’admission de vapeur via le tuyau C est arrêtée par la vanne d’arrêt le contenu du cylindre est confiné. L’eau venant du réservoir L est injectée dans le cylindre via le tuyau P. Cette eau injectée dans le cylindre accélère la condensation de la vapeur dans le cylindre ce qui crée un vide ( relatif). Le piston est dés lors repoussé vers le bas par la pression de l’air externe ( ambiant), le piston entraine aussi la poutre F. Ce mouvement soulève le contrepoids K et aussi le la tige I de la pompe vers le haut.

Le tuyau R évacue l’eau condensée, la partie immergée de ce tuyau , (qui a la forme d’un U) est représentée par la lettre S. et fermant le circuit du cylindre fermement. M est la liaison d’une petite pompe auxiliaire qui remplit le réservoir L au travers du tuyau N. Dans la version d’origine les vanne d’arrêts étaient actionnées manuellement.
