ארקהם (באנגלית: Arkham) היא עיר בדיונית, אשר הומצאה בידי הסופר האמריקאי ה. פ. לאבקרפט. היא נמצאת במסצ'וסטס, ארצות הברית, ומהווה חלק אינטגרלי מעולמו הספרותי לאחר שהופיעה ברבים מסיפוריו וכן ביצירות רבות אשר נכללות תחת סוגת המיתוסים של קת'ולהו[1].

הוצאת ארקהם, הוצאת פרסום ספרים אשר הוקמה בידי שניים מחבריו הקרובים של לאבקרפט, אוגוסט דרלת' ודונלד וואנדרי, שאלה את שמה מעירו של לאבקרפט כמחווה[2]. המוסד ארקהם לחולי נפש על שם אליזבת', מוסד בדיוני מסיפורי הקומיקס של באטמן, לקח גם הוא את שמו מעיר זו[3].

עולמו של ה. פ. לאבקרפט עריכה

ארקהם היא ביתה של אוניברסיטת מיסקטוניק, המופיעה ברבות מעבודותיו של לאבקרפט. המוסד האקדמי מממן מסעות שונים בסיפורים "בהרי הטירוף" (1936) ו"הצל מחוץ לזמן" (1936); דמותו של וולטר גילמן מ"החלומות בבית המכשפה" (1933) משתתפת בשיעורים באוניברסיטה. מוסדות אחרים הנמצאים בעיר שראוי לציין הם החברה ההיסטורית של ארקהם והסנטוריום של ארקהם. בסיפור "הרברט ווסט - מחיה המתים" (1922) נכתב כי העיר הותקפה על ידי התפרצות קשה של טיפואיד ב-1905.

העיר ידועה בעיקר בשל גגותיה הפרסתיים והמעשיות האפלות שהתרחשו בה לאורך מאות השנים האחרונות. היעלמותם של ילדים (אשר נרצחו לכאורה בהקרבות טקסיות) בערב מאי ודברים אחרים מהסוג הזה נחשבים כחלק רגיל מחייהם של תושביה האומללים של העיר.

מיקום עריכה

המיקום המדויק של העיר מעולם לא נכתב במפורש, אולם מקובל לחשוב שהיא נמצאת בין אינסמאות' לבין דאנוויץ'. כמו כן סיפוריו של לאבקרפט מרמזים על כך שהיא נמצאת היכן שהוא מצפון לבוסטון, ככל הנראה במחוז אסקס, מסצ'וסטס[4].

מיפוי מאוחר יותר של עולמו של לאבקרפט מציע שארקהם נמצאת לא הרחק מקולג' גורדון, אם כי בספרותו של לאבקרפט ייתכן שמוסד אמיתי זה הוחלף בידי המוסד הבדיוני אוניברסיטת מיסקטוניק. המודל האמיתי עליו מושתתת ארקהם היא ככל הנראה העיר סיילם, אשר הייתה ידועה לשמצה בשל פרשת ציד המכשפות שהתרחשה בה ב-1692[5].

הסנטוריום של ארקהם מופיע בסיפור הקצר "הדבר שעל סף הדלת" מ-1937 וייתכן שהוא תואם לבית החולים של דנברס הנמצא בעיר דנברס, מסצ'וסטס[6]. בית החולים עצמו הופיע בשני סיפורים אחרים של לאבקרפט, "המודל של פיקמן" מ-1927 ו"הצל מעל אינסמאות'" מ-1936.

  4. ^ The actual location of Arkham is a subject of debate. Will Murrayplaces Arkham in central Massachusetts and suggests that it is based on the small village of Oakham. Robert D. Marten rejects this claim and equates Arkham with Salem, and thinks that Arkham is named for Arkwright, Rhode Island (which is now part of Fiskville). Lovecraft himself, in a letter to F. Lee Baldwin dated April 29, 1934, wrote that "[my] mental picture of Arkham is of a town something like Salem in atmosphere [and] style of houses, but more hilly [and] with a college (which Salem [lacks]) ...
