בשנת 1993 מונתה ברי ליושבת ראש נציבות זכויות האזרח על ידי הנשיא [[ביל קלינטון]], שמינה אותה גם לכהונה נוספת בשנת 1999.

בנוסף לעבודתה בנציבות לזכויות האזרח, מונתה ברי כיו"ר המועצה הלאומית של הקרן לרדיו, פסיפיקה, ביוני 1997. היא משכה אש ועוררה מחלוקת בין המאזינים, עורכי תוכניות ואנשי התחנות, לאחר שהיא וועדת המנהלים ניסו לשנות את לוח השידורים כדי למשוך קהל מגוון יותר. "היפים לבנים מעל גיל 50," כך למשל תיארה ברי את העורכים והקהל של KPFA בברקלי. שמועות על פעולות הכוללות מכירת תחנות דגל כמו KPFA הופצו באופן נרחב על ידי העורכים.
