הסטוריון ופרשן פוליטי יהודי-אמריקאי

זאב וולטר לקוויראנגלית: Walter Ze'ev Laqueur;‏ 26 במאי 192130 בספטמבר 2018) היה היסטוריון יהודי-אמריקאי ופרשן פוליטי, יליד שלזיה, אז בגרמניה. בשנים 1938–1953 חי בארץ ישראל המנדטורית, אחר כך במדינת ישראל. כיהן כפרופסור באוניברסיטת ברנדייס ואוניברסיטת ג'ורג'טאון בארצות הברית. תחומי מחקריו היו בעיקר השואה, אירופה בימי המלחמה הקרה ואחריה, הטרור, הסכסוך במזרח התיכון.

ביוגרפיה עריכה

ראשית חייו בגרמניה ובארץ ישראל עריכה

לקויר נולד בשנת 1921 בברסלאו שבגרמניה (כיום ורוצלב שבפולין) למשפחה יהודית חילונית. אביו, פריץ לאקֶר או לקויר (Laqeur) היה יצרן סרבלים ואמו, אלזה לבית ברלינר הייתה עקרת בית. למד בבית ספר יסודי שאותו פקדו ילדי האריסטוקרטיה הגרמנית והמעמד הגבוה היהודי. עם חבריו לבית הספר נמנה ווילי כהן, לימים היסטוריון שנספה בשואה בליטא. לקויר הצטיין בלימודים וקיצר את שנות הלימודים כך שאחרי לימודים בגימנסיית יואכים בברסלאו הספיק לסיים בגרות לפני הפקעות נוספות של הזכויות הבסיסיות של התושבים היהודים בגרמניה בשנת 1938. בנעוריו פרט לחיי תרבות עשירה, כולל קריאה נלהבת בעיתונים, עסק לקויר בספורט - אתלטיקה קלה, כדורגל, כדוריד, איגרוף. מבחינה פוליטית נמשך בהתחלה כנער לרעיונות הקומוניסטים שנפוצו במחתרת. בגיל 17 דחה את הרעיון להירשם ללימודי הנדסה בצ'כסלובקיה ובנובמבר 1938, שלושה ימים לפני ליל הבדולח עלה לקויר לארץ ישראל.[1] התחיל לימודים באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים בעזרת אחד מדודיו, אך הפסיק אחרי שנת לימודים אחת. בשנים 1939–1944 עבד בחקלאות בקיבוצים שער הגולן, עין שמר והזורע שבו התקבל כחבר. בתקופה שבה היה פצוע משבר ברגל ניצל את הזמן ללימוד השפה הרוסית שהפכה לשפה השישית בה שלט, לצד גרמנית, עברית, ערבית ואחרות.[1] בהמשך היה עיתונאי בירושלים, כולל בימי המצור במלחמת העצמאות וגם אחריה. בירושלים התגורר קודם בשכונת עיסאוויה אחר כך במושבה הגרמנית. הפך לאוטודידקט ופקד תכופות את הספרייה הלאומית.[1] עבד בעיתון של תנועת השומר הצעיר, "המשמר" שהפך לעל המשמר וכמו כן בפלסטיין פוסט, לימים ג'רוזלם פוסט. נשלח בין היתר לסקר את מחנות המעצר בקפריסין.[1] בנוסף היה כתב של עיתונים אמריקאים במזרח התיכון ופרשן מדיני של "ג'רוזלם פוסט" ושל קול ישראל. הוריו, שלא עלה בידם להגר, נספו בשואה.

באנגליה ובארצות הברית עריכה

הוא היה למנהל המכון להיסטוריה יהודית בת זמננו בספריית וינר בלונדון בשנים 19651994. בצוותא עם ג'ורג' מוסה בשנים 1955–1964 הקים וערך את Journal of Contemporary History and of Survey . היה העורך המייסד של The Washington Papers. מ-1969 הוא היה חבר, ולאחר מכן יושב ראש (עד שנת 2000) של מועצת המחקר הבינלאומית בוושינגטון International Research Council CSIS Washington. כיהן כפרופסור להיסטוריה של הרעיונות באוניברסיטת ברנדייס בשנים 1968–1973, פרופסור באוניברסיטת ג'ורג'טאון בשנים 1976–1988. ושימש כפרופסור אורח באוניברסיטת הרווארד, אוניברסיטת שיקגו, אוניברסיטת תל אביב ואוניברסיטת ג'ונס הופקינס.

מחקריו עריכה

עבודתיו העיקריות דנו בהיסטוריה של אירופה במאות התשע-עשרה והעשרים, בייחוד היסטוריה של רוסיה, היסטוריה של גרמניה, והיסטוריה של המזרח התיכון. כתיבתו השתרעה על נושאים רבים, מתנועות נוער גרמניות, ציונות, היסטוריה של מדינת ישראל והיסטוריה תרבותית של רפובליקת ויימאר ורוסיה, קומוניזם, השואה (ספרו "הסוד הנורא" הוא הספר הראשון המתאר כיצד נודע לעולם וליישוב דבר הפתרון הסופי, למרות ניסיונות ההסתרה של הנאצים), פאשיזם והיסטוריה דיפלומטית של המלחמה הקרה. ספריו תורגמו לשפות רבות והוא היה אחד המייסדים של חקר הטרור, ושל הגרילה. פרשנותו לעניינים בינלאומיים הופיעה בעיתונים ובכתבי-עת אמריקאיים ואירופיים רבים.

ספרו "ההיסטוריה של הציונות" (A History of Zionism) נחל הצלחה רבה ותורגם לשפות רבות בכללן יפנית, רוסית וסינית. ספרו "ימי אירופה האחרונים" (The Last Days of Europe: Epitaph for an Old Continent) דן במשבר הפוקד את אירופה בשל התמעטות האוכלוסין והירידה בשיעורי הילודה. היה עורך ראשי ל"אנציקלופדיית השואה" בהוצאת ייל. כפי שציין שלמה אבינרי " בתקופה שבה יותר ויותר חוקרים מתמקדים בנושאים צרים יותר ויותר, לקויר היה איש אשכולות שהתמחותו לא מנעה ממנו מעולם לראות את התמונה הרחבה יותר". "רוחב אופקיו וידיעתו ההיסטורית והתרבותית איפשרו לו לתת לקורא תמונה השוואתית ומקיפה". [1]

חייו הפרטיים עריכה

נפטר ב-30 בספטמבר 2018 בביתו שבוושינגטון בגיל 97. הובא לקבורה בירושלים. אשתו הראשונה, נעמי, מתה בשנת 1995. הותיר אחריו את אשתו השנייה, סוזי, ושתי בנות.
