קול השלום הייתה תחנת רדיו פיראטית, אשר הוקמה במאי 1973 על-ידי אייבי נתן.

היסטוריה

The ship anchored off the coast of Tel Aviv, where it remained for nearly two decades. Founded by Abie Nathan and The Peace Ship Foundation based in New York, the radio station attempted to communicate a message of peaceful coexistence to the volatile Middle East. In fact, 90 percent of the station's output consisted of formatted popular music programs presented by a team of professional, mostly British, broadcasters housed on the ship.

The main on-air studio comprised a Gates Diplomat mixer which also controlled the microphones in the large conference studio. Gates turntables with Gates pick up arms and Shure cartridges with Gates NAB cartridge machines for jingles and commercials completed the on-air studio. The production studio used a Gates turntable and with reel-to-reel recorders and NAB cartridge recording unit.

The Voice of Peace was Israel's first offshore pop station, and first commercially-funded private broadcast operation. The station’s use of catchy American PAMS, CPMG, JAM and TM Productions jingles, English speaking Disc Jockeys and a playlist of Top 40 hits attracted sponsors such as TWA and Coca Cola. Initially, the station transmitted on 1539 AM and 100.0 FM.

The AM or mediumwave transmitter was installed in New York prior to 1972 and comprised two 25,000 watt Collins units and a Collins combiner giving the station a potential 50 kW AM signal. The mediumwave signal was broadcast from a centre-fed horizontal antenna slung between the fore and aft masts, a similar design to those used by Radio Veronica and, later, Laser 558. The station normally ran at 35 kW until late 1976 when it was decided to operate one transmitter at a time, keeping one in reserve. However, in 1985, Keith York repaired the combiner and the two Collins units ran together again. This resulted in a large mailbag from Turkey, Crete, Greece and Cyprus, the Voice of Peace message reaching those regions for the first time since 1976.

The 20 kW FM transmitter installed in Israel was manufactured by Harris. This, combined with the antenna array, delivered around 80 kW ERP (Effective Radiated Power) of stereo to the region.

During the station's heyday, many notable personalities were involved in broadcasting via the airwaves of the Voice of Peace. John Lennon, The Carpenters, Johnny Mathis and numerous other celebrities recorded ‘messages of peace’ which were transmitted from the ship. John and Yoko Lennon signed hundreds of 'Peace' posters, held on the ship, which Abie Nathan could sell on to raise revenue for the station should times become hard. Thanks to Tavas Advertising, this situation never developed and due to their hard work, The Peace Ship was able to function into the early 1980s on Tavas-generated revenue pre-May 1976.

During the mid-1970s, the station boasted more than 20 million listeners stretching from the Middle East to southern Europe and Turkey due to the 4GG format used by the professional broadcast team drawn from Britain and Australia and led by Keith Ashton. The VoP had several (mostly short lived) rival offshore radio (and even television) stations during its time on air. The most well known of these was the right wing station Arutz Sheva (Channel 7).

Many notable broadcasters spent time as presenters with The Voice of Peace, including Tony Allan, Ken Dickin, Phil Brice, Steve Gordon, Don Stevens, Alan Roberts and Crispian St John who sailed through the Suez Canal onboard with Abie Nathan in early 1977, Gavin McCoy, Tony Lyman (known then as Vince Mould), Malcolm Barry, Guy Starkey, Tom Hardy, Keith York, Kas Collins , Nathan Morley , Mark Hurrell, Steve Marshall, Chris Pearson, Steve Silby, Rob Charles, Dave Shearer, Tony Mandell, Nigel Harris, Cliff Walker, Alex Skinner, Nigel Grover, John Macdonald and Grant Benson. Johnny Lewis appeared on the VoP in the early 1980s as Johnny Moss. Kenny Page is acknowledged as being one of the station's longest serving presenters, having worked on board from the 1970s to the 1990s. Paul Rogers spent one year on board from 1984-1985, before moving on to become Dave Collins on Radio Caroline and is currently still working on radio in the UK.

A Reunion in Amsterdam 'The Radio Day' 2006, celebrated the launch of a new book by Hans Knot of station memories in November 4, 2006 and the conference was attended by many media interests including Channel Two Israel who interviewed Don Stevens, Chris Pearson and Steve Silby and showed the newsreel worldwide. This resulted in Don Stevens making contact with his long lost child Sarit, one whom he prayed for every day, through the good offices of Channel 2, and he was overwhelmed to discover he was part of a three child family.

התחנה שידרה בעיקר בשפה האנגלית (אך חלק מתוכן שידוריה של התחנה כלל גם עברית, ערבית וצרפתית) readily accepted by listeners in all countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea who felt the station reflected Western ideals held by the upper classes of the region.

לתחנה היו מספר running shows פופולריות, ששודרו לאורך של 20 שנים. ביניהן היו גם "שעת הדמדומים" (תוכנית ששודרה מידי 6 בערב, ובה שודרו להיטים נבחרים), "תוכנית המוזיקה הקלאסית" (שודרה ב-19:30 בערב), "ענייני לילה מאוחרים" (שודרה כל יום מחצות עד 3 בלילה), ועוד.

The Voice of Peace was generally tolerated by the Israeli Government as Abie Nathan was a beloved personality in the country; however officials at the IBA (Israel Broadcasting Authority) were alarmed at the station's popularity in its first years on air and quickly set about devising a state run pop service, Reshet Gimel, in May 1976.

Nathan was imprisoned on several occasions for violating Israeli laws forbidding contact with "enemy" countries and the PLO In a protest against Israeli policy towards Palestinians he wore nothing but black for 20 years

מחוות

In 2003 NMC Music released a CD called the Voice of Peace, featuring songs and jingles from the station. A film about Abie Nathan soon followed called As the Sun Set, directed by Eytan Harris.

Israeli radio station Radius 100 airs a weekly 2-hour tribute program Fridays at 4p local time, repeated Saturdays at noon.

הרדיו החינוכי

הרדיו החינוכי הוא מיזם של רשות השידור, משרד החינוך ומשרד התקשורת, שבמסגרתו מוקצה התדר 106FM לתחנות רדיו קהילתיות, המופעלות על ידי מוסדות חינוכיים, כגון: אוניברסיטאות, מכללות, בתי ספר, מתנ"סים ועוד.

את הרדיו החינוכי מתפעלים תלמידים במגמת תקשורת לבגרות, או סטודנטים שלומדים לתואר בתקשורת. עצם קיומו של הרדיו החינוכי הוא לספק חווית לימוד מעשית וחברתית וקירוב הנוער לעולם התקשורת. לדוגמה, תחנות הרדיו החינוכיות משלבות גם קהילות ערביות ודתיות. ותוכן השידורים של תחנות מסוג זה יהיה בדרך-כלל בנושאי חינוך וקהילה.

כדי להקים רדיו חינוכי יש להקים מגמת תקשורת לבגרות במוסד החינוכי, באישור משרד החינוך (במוסדות חינוך להשכלה גבוהה, כגון אוניברסיטה, יש להקים חוג לתואר ראשון בתקשורת לפחות).

כיום פועלות בישראל כ-30 תחנות רדיו חינוכיות, המתופעלות על ידי 80 מוסדות חינוך שונים.

קול הגליל העליון

רדיו קול הגליל העליון. אזור הזיכיון הוא אצבע הגליל. הרדיו משמש בנוסף לאזעקות חירום של המועצה האזורית גליל עליון. הרדיו משדר 24 שעות ביממה. התדר שהוקצה לו הוא 105.3FM. לרדיו שלושה אולפנים: אחד ב"הר וגיא" בקיבוץ דפנה ושניים בעינות ירדן בקיבוץ עמיר, אחד מהם משמש לשידורי חירום בלבד, ושני משדרים; אחד במנרה ואחד בסאסא. הרדיו מתופעל על ידי בית הספר "הר וגיא" ובית הספר "עינות הירדן".

קול כנרת

רדיו קול כנרת. הרדיו מתופעל על ידי המכללה האקדמית כנרת. אזור הזיכיון הוא עמק הירדן וטבריה, דרום רמת הגולן, וצפת. תוכן השידורים בתחנה משלב בין אקטואליה, חדשות מקומיות, תרבות, ספורט, מוזיקה ועוד.

רדיו "קול אריאל" היא תחנת רדיו חינוכית בחסות "קול ישראל" הממוקמת בלב העיר אריאל, ב"מרכז תקשורת אריאל" . התחנה משדרת משנת 2000.

התחנה מופעלת על ידי תלמידי מגמת תקשורת, בני נוער ומבוגרים מאריאל והסביבה.

ברדיו משודרות מספר תוכניות קבועות במגוון של נושאים - אקטואליה, מוזיקה מזרחית, לטינית, לועזית, מחשבים, הרדיו מכין לבגרות בתקשורת תלמידי תיכון, ועובד בשיתוף "המרכז האוניברסיטאי אריאל בשומרון". בכל יום שישי משודרות תוכניות קבועות, כמו "באנו לעשות שמח" עם דניאל כוכבי ורועי כהן, תוכנית זו משודרת משעה 13:00 עד 15:00, ו"מוזיקה לקראת שבת" עם יוסי מוג'בר, תוכנית זו משודרת מהשעה 15:00 עד 17:00. תוכניות אלה זוכות להאזנה רבה בקרב הציבור האריאלי אשר מרבה להתקשר לתוכנית להאיר, להעיר, לבקש ולשבח בכל נושא אפשרי, רובם אף עולים בשידור חי ומשוחח עם המנחים.

רדיו קול רמת השרון

רדיו קול רמת השרון תחנה המשדרת מאולפניה הממוקמים בתיכון רוטברג בעיר. התחנה החלה את שידוריה בפברואר 2008, ומשדרים בה תלמידים משני התיכונים בעיר: רוטברג ואלון, כמו גם בוגרים משני בתי הספר ותושבי העיר. מנהל הרדיו הוא יניב מורוזובסקי.

קול דימונה

רדיו "קול דימונה" היא תחנת רדיו חינוכית בחסות "קול ישראל" הממוקמת בלב העיר דימונה, ב"מרכז תקשורת". התחנה הוקמה בסוף שנות ה-90 של המאה העשרים בשיתוף חברת סלקום ועיריית דימונה.

התחנה מופעלת על ידי תלמידי מגמת תקשורת, ילדים ובני נוער מדימונה וירוחם ושדרים בוגרים מתנדבים.

מנהל הרדיו בפועל הוא מקס פרץ.

ברדיו פועלות מספר תוכניות קבועות במגוון רחב של נושאים - אקטואליה, מוזיקה מזרחית, לטינית, לועזית, ועדות. כמו כן הרדיו מפעיל שידורים קבועים בנושאי דת ויהדות, משפט, וייעוץ לאזרח. עד כה הפיק הרדיו מספר שידורים מובילים שזכו לחשיפה ארצית כגון שידור של 72 שעות ברצף מפסטיבל לקולנוע ותקשורת צעיר,

הרדיו מכשיר במגוון תחומים תלמידים ליחידות הבגרות בפיקוח משרד החינוך וליווי צמוד של יוני לביא - מפיק ומפקח בתחנות הרדיו החינוכיות מטעם משרד התקשורת ומשרד החינוך. בימי שישי החל מן השעה 9:00 בבוקר ועד שעה לכניסת השבת הרדיו החינוכי הופך ביום זה לרדיו קהילתי תחת הסיסמה : "הרדיו עם הפנים לקהילה". בכל יום שישי משודרות תוכניות קבועות, פרלמנט אקטואלי בנושאים שונים , תוכנית זו משודרת משעה 9:00 עד 11:00 וזוכה להאזנה גדולה מאוד בקרב הציבור הדימונאי, אשר מרבה להתקשר לתוכנית להאיר ולהעיר בכל נושא אפשרי חלקם אף עולה בשידור חי ומשוחח עם המנחים. בתוכנית מתארחים שרים, חברי כנסת, אנשי ממשל מקומי, אנשי משטרה, צבא וביטחון, ומוסדות רווחה. לאחר מכן משודרת תוכנית דת לקהילה אותה עורכים ומגישים רבנים מתנועת חב"ד המקומית. מאוחר יותר הרדיו עובר לשידורים "קלים" יותר בתחום הבידור והמוזיקה עם מיטב השדרים והעורכים אשר הרדיו "מייצר" כל השנה. במהלך השבת הרדיו משדר כ"גל שקט" לטובת הקהילה המסורתית, ורק בעיתות חירום לאחר מתן אישור מיוחד של פיקוד העורף וראש העיר, הרדיו ישדר כללי התנהגות בשעת חירום. במהלך השבוע משדרים ברדיו למעלה מ 95% מהזמן תלמידי גן תקשורת, תלמידי המועדוניות, ותלמידי המגמה. כאן המקום לציין כי רוב התוכניות הקהילתיות מוקלטות לצרכי לימוד, פיקוח והפקת שיעורים לתלמידי המגמה. הרדיו "קול דימונה" 106 FM מנוהל ומפוקח 24 שעות ביממה על ידי מנהל "מרכז תקשורת" מקס פרץ.
